PRESERVING THE LIFE OF YOUR FENCE

So, now what you have a new fence, we are sure you want to keep it looking as nice as it does now, and for years to come.

We recommend sealing your fence with Preserva-Wood Penetrating Sealer and Finish for Natural Wood after installation. It is one of the few environmentally responsible sealers made. It has UV inhibitors to keep the color from changing and it does not crack or peel like varnish or paint.

Although, we do not do any painting or sealing ourselves, we can however, provide the proper amount of Preserva-Wood for you or others to do the job. This can be delivered to you at the time of installation with the cost added to your invoice. This product has an average coverage rate of 400 square feet at a cost of $22.50 per gallon. You can apply one coat to both sides of a 6’ tall by 70-foot long fence using two gallons at a total cost of approximately seventy cents per linear foot.

It is best to allow some time for the lumber to cure. One or two weeks of mild to warm weather usually does the trick. Then apply two coats to obtain maximum protection. Apply again, when you see the start of discoloration, usually one to two years.

Preserva-Wood comes in clear and assorted transparent colors to enhance the redwood or cedar you have chosen.

For any fencing or decking that has already become discolored, we carry Preserva-Products Wood Renewer. This item bleaches, cleans, and renews water-stained and weathered wood. Use this in preparation for the application of Preserva-Wood.

Other things we recommend is to keep the base of the fence and bottom rails free of organic debris. Do not “water” your fence. Point the sprinklers away from the fence. Re-nail as needed. Some simple maintenance will help keep your new fence looking as nice as it does now and will help make it last years.

CONSUMER INFORMATION & HANDLING GUIDE FOR OSMOSE® PRESSURE TREATED WOOD

Consumer Information
This wood has been preserved by pressure-treatment with an EPA-registered pesticide containing inorganic arsenic to protect it form insect attack and decay. Wood treated with inorganic arsenic should be used only where such protection is important.

Inorganic arsenic penetrates deeply into and remains in the pressure-treated wood for a long time. Exposure to inorganic arsenic may present certain hazards. Therefore, the following precautions should be taken both when handling the treated wood and in determining where to use or dispose of the treated wood.

Use Site Precautions
Wood pressure-treated with waterborne arsenical preservatives may be used inside residences as long as all sawdust and construction debris are cleaned up and disposed of after construction.

Do not use treated wood under circumstances where the preservatives may become a component of food or animal feed. Examples of such sites would be structures or containers for storing silage food.

Do not use treated wood for cutting-boards or countertops.

Only treated wood that is visibly clean and free of surface residue should be used for patios, decks and walkways.

Do not use treated wood for construction for those portions of beehives, which may come in contact with the honey. Treated wood should not be used where it may come into direct or indirect contact with public drinking water, except for uses involving incidental contact such as docks and bridges.

Handling Precautions
Dispose of treated wood by ordinary trash collection or burial. Treated wood should not be burned in open fires or in stove, fireplaces, or residential boilers because toxic chemicals may be produced as part of the smoke and ashes. Treated wood from commercial or industrial use (e.g., construction sites) may be burned only in commercial or industrial incinerators or boilers in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Avoid frequent or prolonged inhalation of sawdust from treated wood. When sawing and machining treated wood, wear a dust mask. Whenever possible, these operations should be performed outdoors to avoid indoor accumulations of airborne sawdust form treated wood.

When power-sawing and machining, wear goggles to protect eyes from flying particles. Gloves can provide extra protection against splinters and freshly treated wet wood. Allow freshly treated wet wood to dry thoroughly before handling.

Follow good personal hygiene practices in the shop and on the job working with the wood, and before eating, drinking, and use of tobacco products, wash exposed areas thoroughly.

If preservatives or sawdust accumulates on clothes, launder before reuse. Wash work clothes separately from other household clothing.

Building Tips

  1. Use galvanized or stainless fasteners for all outdoor building projects. These types of nails and fasteners are corrosion-resistant and will prevent rust stains on your project.
  2. Nail boards bark side up to reduce cupping. Always nail thin boards to thicker boards to maintain structural integrity. Drill pilot holes before nailing to eliminate splitting. Butt decking boards together firmly. As drying occurs some shrinkage can be expected.
  3. Any exposed wood, pressure treated or not, should be protected from the weather. Application of Osmose Water Repellent or Semi-Transparent Stain will help to minimize warping, checking or splitting.

Osmose Clear Water Repellent can be applied immediately to new pressure treated wood following construction of decks or other outdoor projects.

Osmose Semi-Transparent Stain should be applied to new pressure treated wood as soon as the wood is surface dry. Sprinkling a few drops of water on the wood surface can test the dryness of the wood surface. If the water is rapidly absorbed by the wood, apply Osmose Semi-Transparent Stain immediately. If the water is not readily absorbed by the wood wait a few days and then test again before applying stain.

Similar recommendations are generally applicable for other quality water repellents and semi-transparent stains. However, instructions listed on the label directions of other wood protection products may require different application procedures.
